Fun Weekend

 The weather was beautiful all weekend and we packed a lot in. Saturday morning Tom and Dan went golfing at the Sparrow Point Club and Andrea, the girls and I went to Costco and a couple other stops. We had one of Costco’s bargain lunches so that when we got back to the house we could get swimsuits on and head to the club to join the men at the pool. Our timing was good and the guys joined us for a nice pool afternoon and snacks poolside while the girls swam like fish. We headed home around 5 o’clock and by 6:30 were showered, changed and ready to go out for an adult night out.  The four of us went to see the movie “Top Gun” and we were not disappointed. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a real “feel good” movie on the big screen!

Sunday morning we all walked to Sam’s Bagels for breakfast and by noon we were once again in swimsuits and headed to the Otterbein neighborhood pool. You can bring your own food and drink to this pool, so we had coolers packed for our marathon pool day! The girls had lots of friends to play with in the pool, the adults had a steamed soft-shell crab feast on the picnic table and Dan grilled hot dogs for the little ones. It was perfect pool weather and we stayed till early evening so that once we walked home the girls hit the shower and were in bed. We decided to watch the original “Top Gun” on Netflix, then all slept well.

Today Andrea and I ran a couple of errands while the girls were in school, we picked up Claire, swung by the house to collect Tom and had a nice lunch at Nick’s Fish House on the water.  There is a small marina connected to it, so we felt right at home looking out over the boats and slips…

Brats for dinner, another small load of laundry and we will get packed up to drive back to the boat in North Carolina tomorrow. What a nice break this has been spending time with family and doing land-based activities. At the end of the week we will start our 6 day journey north to cross our wake and complete our loop!

 Left Erie before first light to get out onto the lake before wind and waves picked up and the plan was to travel about 30 miles to Geneva State Park Marina and be tied up by noon.  Well, the best laid plans often don't pan out....  Geneva State Park had no openings for boats, so I started working my way along the coastline and looking for dockage.  None to be had in Fairport and finally found 2 spots (for Al and us) in Mentor Ohio and the Mentor Harbor Yacht Club. What started out as a 5 hour trip quickly turned into a 10 hour slog and we were exhausted by the time we arrived here.  Instead of dodging crab pots, we had to dodge fishing nets! Unbelievable! Columbus MS

 I will try to catch you up on our travels by giving you the short version.  I have to be honest - after my mom died my concentration has not been the same and I haven’t had the mental energy to blog every night.  There have been lots of arrangements to be made, details to attend to and loose ends to tie up.  I have been in constant contact with my brothers in MN and FL and last weekend I flew up to Minnesota to meet them and begin sorting through her things and emptying her apartment. We made a lot of progress and will finish up when I get back there mid-November.  We have to have her apartment empty by Nov. 30. We have continued to travel down the river system and are now in Columbus, MS at Columbus Marina and will stay here until Saturday. Alton IL

 We arrived at Alton Marina in Illinois last Tuesday after 3 of the hardest days for me on the loop.  It was a  huge relief and I felt like I was part of the civilized world again! We planned to stay for 3 nights in order to give ourselves time to rest and re-group, but circumstances and weather made us extend that stay. The weather report for this past weekend originally called for rain and thunderstorms both Saturday and Sunday and we certainly did not want to travel down the river in that, so we cancelled our Saturday night dockage reservation and the first night we could get in again was Tuesday (tomorrow) night. Just so happens that this marina loves loopers and not only is the cost of a night $1/ foot ($43 for us), they have a deal where if you pay for 3 nights you get 3 nights free!
