Holiday Weekend
We are spending the holiday weekend still in a convenient slip at the marina in New Bern. Having a car at our disposal is a game-changer and we ran some errands on Friday, had docktails on Steve and Kathy’s boat and ordered pizza for dinner.
Yesterday morning Tom and Steve got most of the equipment removed from the bow pulpit that will be repaired. I helped Tom lower the anchor onto the dock and he removed the chain, then he and Steve unbolted the roller mechanism ( no easy task as the bolts are on from inside the chain locker). We decided that a break was in order, so after lunch on the boat the 4 of us drove to the town of Bath NC for their Memorial Day street festival. Bath is the oldest city in North Carolina, has a population of 400 and was the home to the famous pirate, Blackbeard. Some of his descendants still live there and they take their pirate heritage very seriously! It is about 15 miles from Washington where we have looked at homes and is on the water in a quiet bay. The homes are historic and charming and everyone is very friendly. They had food trucks and live entertainment and we sat for a long time just watching the boats in the harbor. Cooper Greer performed and I didn’t know who he was, but he is a country singer/songwriter who has several recorded songs and he sounded much like Dierks Bentley to me. Apparently he lives in Greenville and performs at several venues near here and he was so good we stayed for most of his concert! An early dinner at the Tiki Bar in Washington rounded out the afternoon and we returned to the boat about 7:30 pm tired, but feeling like it was an afternoon well spent.
Tom and I took Madison for a walk before sunset and then the two of us strolled downtown for some ice cream. I was surprised at the number of folks out walking around, but I guess it was a lovely evening on a holiday weekend…
