Exploring
We have stayed a day longer than we planned in Ocracoke due to some snarky wind and waves out in the sound today. We don’t have to travel in less than ideal conditions, so we choose not too. The only downside was that the marina where we were did not have space for us to stay another night, so we both had to move our boats to the next set of docks next to the marina which are actually the State Park Docks. They are quite inexpensive and do have power, so it turned out ok. The reason we didn’t stay here the whole time is that they are first come, first serve and if they are full you are SOL since you don’t have a reservation anywhere.
On Sunday we all got our bikes out and rode the 2 miles to the beach and hung out there for a couple of hours. Boy, the ocean is so beautiful here and we were mesmerized by the waves. Kathy and I collected our usual bag of shells and we walked for another mile down the coast of the island. We broke up the ride back to the boat by stopping at Howard’s Pub for a cold drink and a snack, then returned to the marina. We all decided we needed a rest before docktails and dinner, and we had grilled chicken and pasta salad on Orion.
Yesterday Kathy and I set off to see all of the shops on the main road and I don’t believe we missed a single one! Whew! The rest of the day was spent exploring the immediate area and reading. We had been wanting to eat lunch at the cute restaurant at the marina and today was the day. All seating is outdoors and we had a perfect view of the bay and all the boats coming and going.
Kathy and I spent the afternoon at the pool at the marina (she held on to her key until Steve let us in through the locked gate) and that was wonderful. Dinner was on How Sweet It Is tonight and Kathy made a fresh shrimp and pasta dish. While we were eating the passenger ferry from Hatteras pulled in and that prompted us to look up schedules and fares to go there. Turns out it is $5 a person per leg, so for $10 we can take the 1 hour ride to Hatteras tomorrow and check it out while we’re so close. Cape Hatteras is one of those places you grow up hearing about if you live in the Midwest but don’t ever think you’ll actually get there. I’m excited!
