Elizabeth City

Another beautiful day to cruise on the Albemarle Sound! We played the fun game of crab pot dodging all day - they should be eating nothing but crabs here judging from the number of crab pots! And the black floats are terrible to see in the water until you’re on top of them.  Who decided black was a good color to use? We’re all the good colors taken? Sigh….

Fun story - today after we turned into the Pasqutank River to head up to Elizabeth City Steve and Kathy spotted a full size float mat floating in the river.  This thing was as big as a king size bed and brand new.  They circled and Kathy was ab le to snag it with her boat hook and now they have this huge pad rolled up on their cockpit.  They plan to cut it down and use part of it as a lounge pad on the bow of their boat and they will still have enough to use as a pool float at their house.  You never know what you’ll find in the water….

We are docked at a nice long free dock at Mid-Atlantic Christian University in Elizabeth City and what a nice stop it is. The grounds are pristine and we are on the dock with another looper couple from Florida who just started their loop a month ago. Steve, Kathy and Tom walked down to the City Museum and toured that, while I opted to stay on the boat to rest and cool off. Then after drinks on our boat we all walked downtown and ate at a fun pub. They have made an entertainment district out of one of their alleys and had live entertainment tonight. We stayed to listen to the bank for awhile, then let Madison play at home on the lawn here and rested in the porch swings in the gazebo till dark.

Tomorrow we go through one lock and have one bridge opening before starting up the Dismal Swamp. Which, by the way, is anything but a swamp.  Who names these things?? It’s a man made canal cut through the pine forest and is 22 miles of straightaway cruising up to Chesapeake VA. There is a welcome center about a third of the way into the Swamp and we will tie up at the free dock there for tomorrow night.  Then - we cross our wake on Friday!!! Stay tuned!
