Kingfisher Marina/Demopolis AL
We arrived at Kingfisher Marina about 1 pm yesterday and we were one of 8 boats coming into the marina that day. The scenery on our boat trip down here was beautiful and the most exciting for me was going by the famous white cliffs of Epps. Our friends, Kathy and Steve took photos of Orion going by the cliffs and they turned out so well! The only frustrating thing the past couple of days is the lack of cell service. Verizon doesn’t function well here and we have been unable to communicate with family and friends or access any internet. Truly wilderness boating….
The other big news for me is that when we pulled into our slip I discovered that we were docked opposite the Here’s To Us with Sam and Rev Crouse on board. We have been watching their “What Yacht To Do” videos and reading their loop blogs for over a year and they pretty much lived in our living room for all that time. They are the couple that made us feel that we could actually do this crazy thing and their videos were so informational. I learned a lot and made lots of notes…. To meet them in person was just the best thing that has happened in weeks! We chatted with them for awhile and they graciously agreed to let us have our picture taken with them on their boat.
We borrowed the courtesy car early this morning and Kathy rode with us into Demopolis to Walmart to pick up a few things before our FOUR nights of anchoring out…. Yikes! The gal that runs the docks here is a salty gal named Anna Marie and she is a hoot. She has a list of rules and procedures as long as your arm and borrowing the car was an involved process. The best and funniest part was the instruction to stop at the Marathon gas station just down the road before returning the car, give the cashier inside $1.50 and ask for a receipt. After the 0.455 gal of gas was pumped, we had to call her to let her know we were almost back, meet her at the office and present the key and receipt together. Someone along the way must have calculated that $1.50 was the amount of gas consumed going to the allowed destinations, but all the loopers have had fun comparing their $1.50 stories…
There was a meeting of the people on the 8 boats leaving here tomorrow and because the Demopolis lock will close tomorrow at 8am for 8 hours, we all have to leave here at 6 am (in the dark) and lock through at 6:30 as a group before it closes. Tom will call the lock master at 5:45 and radio everyone that we are good to go, and then we will all parade out of here and travel the 4 miles to the lock. We spent the day today getting everything washed down, filled up and ready for our 4 anchorages. Steve and Kathy got the courtesy car from 6-8 pm so the 4 of us went into town and had a fun dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Then came the trip to the Marathon gas station with the receipt and half a gallon of gas before getting back.
Cell coverage will probably be spotty for the next few days, so I will post again when I have service.
