Algonac

We crossed Lake St. Clair today and arrived in Algonac, MI about 1:30 pm.  We had about an hour of rain while we were still in the marina, but it had stopped by the time we left around 10. We were traveling in the shipping channel about half of the time getting here and that was only exciting when we had 2 freighters to deal with - one going south and one going north.  We let the southbound freighter get well past us and waited until the northbound one passed and we fell in line behind him. There were lots and lots of pleasure boaters out since this is high season here and it’s a little like a game of Frogger staying out of everyone’s way!

The marina here is a municipal marina and it is so neat and tidy! Al is docked right next to us and some other looper friends are docked around the corner. Docktails were on Peter and Yvonne’s boat tonight and we met a couple who lives around the corner and is dreaming of doing the loop one day. They had a million questions, but are about 3 years away from looping. Then we met another couple who have a smaller cruiser here and were returning from a weekend jaunt. We hit it off right away with them - too bad they aren’t traveling the loop yet…. We toured each other’s boats and then they stayed on ours for some visiting.

Algonac is known for being the home of Chris Craft boats and even though they are out of business the original factory buildings are here right beside the marina.  It has been gutted and it is used for overflow car parking and winter boat storage.  Sort of sad really…. End of an era.

We have an early day tomorrow with a 40 mile trip against the 3-4 knot current, which will slow our already snail’s pace down even more, so we have to allow extra time. That means early to bed!
