Seneca Falls
This has been the best little surprise of our trip on the Erie so far. We actually took a little detour down the Cayuga-Seneca Canal and paid a visit to the Village of Seneca Falls. They have a wonderful town dock here and beautiful visitors center with restrooms, showers and laundry. Dockage is free and we have electric and water also. All in a picturesque setting and within walking distance of everything the town has to offer. We got here about noon on Wednesday and are leaving tomorrow. One day was not enough time to see and do everything...
Seneca Falls is best known for 2 things - the site of the beginning of the Women's Rights Movement in 1848 and it is believed to be the fictional town of Bedford Falls depicted in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life". Both of those things are featured everywhere in town and we visited the Wonderful Life Museum on our first afternoon. What a fun experience! Lot's of memorabilia and movie souvenirs. They sell replicas of the little bell from George Bailey's Christmas tree and people write messages on them and attach them to the bridge where George jumped. Our boat is docked right across the river from the original Seneca Knitting Mill and that bridge.
We visited the National Park for the Women's Rights movement and they have done such a great job with that museum and grounds. There is an outdoor area where the speakers gave speeches and the original building which was the church where the conference took place is next door. Both of my girls would love to see this!
We did quite a bit of walking around town and the streets are lined with well-preserved old mansions. So much fun to look at. We went out to dinner tonight at Parker's Grille and Tap House and tomorrow we move on down the canal.
