The Dam Trip

It was a grey, rainy day today but we still packed a lot in.  Wes and Leanne came over to our boat this morning so we could route plan and pick marinas to stay in.  She and I called and got reservations at places north of here for the next couple of nights so we are set for awhile.

Around 2 pm we called a taxi and the 4 of us went 9 miles up the road to the Croton Dam. It is strictly for water retention and the area was beautiful.  We walked across the top and then took the trail down to the bottom where there is a pretty park.  Called another taxi and had them drop us off at the grocery store to stock up again.  We won't be in places handy to restaurants for the next segment, so we needed to have enough provisions!

I had just loaded all the grocery bags onto the boat and was starting to put things away while Tom returned the cart to the marina office when Madison decided she needed to go out. I was trying to be helpful and leashed her up to wait for Tom, but she got anxious and tried to leap to the dock from the boat cockpit on the back.  She missed the dock and fell into the water up to her chest and I still had a death grip on her collar and her neck.  She got scared but seemed to know not to struggle and she had both paws up on the dock hanging on for dear life.  I didn't want to let her go because the current is really strong here and I thought she might get swept down the row of boats and get her collar snagged on something. I managed to get down on my knees (not a pretty sight) and get one hand under her front leg and then began hollering for Tom who was not coming back fast enough.  He was able to just scoop her out by her front legs and we all breathed a sigh of relief.  I will be sore for a day or two, I'm sure.  Geez-Louise!

After we had all settled back in, we heard a knock on the boat and it was a fellow Looper, Herb, who is legendary.  He has a big, old boat and travels by himself and I think he is 80 years old.  He was inviting all the Loopers to his boat for docktails and we ended up with a different group of 10 this time.  He is a hoot and had a table all set up with snacks for everyone. It gave us a chance to meet people from 3 new boats too.

We leave here about 8 am so at least it won't be such an early morning...

PS - it's a stuffed cat
